Textile Tradition of Assam
This project revolves around the tangible textiles of Assam, a state in the northeastern region of India renowned for its rich tradition in handloom weaving. Its focus is to highlight the often-overlooked women who play a significant role in crafting these textiles. Recognising the profound metaphorical value of textiles in storytelling, I aim to honour and explore the rich traditions of Assam's textiles through their involvement.
Tracing Thoughts
Textiles as a Means of Narrative Expression
Immersed in the rich tapestry of history, the concept of using textiles as a means of storytelling emphasises that stories and art play a crucial role in understanding the culture of a place. I embark on a vibrant journey through time, employing the language of textile prints to unveil the untold tales of Assamese textiles and the remarkable women who breathe life into them.
In my creative process, I started with sketching and material research. Through experimental screen printing, I explored layered checks, stripes, and traditionally inspired stylized motifs with vibrant pigments. I also used various printing techniques to add texture and captivating elements to the fabric.
Tactile exploration
I explored a variety of techniques to create a play of tactility, including mixing pigments with puff and flock printing, and even ventured into laser engraving. I wanted to create captivating patterns through these diverse methods. This deepened my understanding of the endless possibilities and diverse ways of printing on fabrics.
Visualisation
Alongside preserving the essence of traditional craft, my aim was to reimagine its relevance in modern society. Through extensive research, I discovered the growing trend of incorporating handcrafted prints and patterns with a rich heritage into upholstery and soft furnishings. The visualisations presented here showcase the diverse range of products that can be created using these captivating swatches.
Project Reflection
It has been an exploration of balancing, the retracing of traditional designs while honouring the past and embracing relevance in the present. It has been a study on textiles being a medium of narration, revealing the profound intersection between traditional craft and modern design.
